Some recent ECUs use protections that prevent normal OBD or Bench tuning access until a specialised unlock has been completed. AutoTuner’s Mail-in Unlock service performs that operation on the physical ECU before it returns to the professional.
Why an unlock may be required
The protection is linked to a particular ECU family, hardware and software level. Two cars with the same model name may not have the same requirement. The first step is therefore identification with a compatible AutoTuner tool.
The professional workflow
An AutoTuner-equipped professional removes the ECU following the correct vehicle procedure, protects it for transport and submits the request. The unit is shipped to the authorised unlock service, processed, tested and returned.
After refitting, the professional can use the access method made available by the unlock and continue the normal Swaptune reading and writing workflow.
Cost and immobilisation
Swaptune indicates that a compatible ECU may require Remote or Mail-in Unlock. The current service is charged at €250 excluding VAT plus shipping. The vehicle cannot be used while its ECU is away, so transport time and appointment planning must be explained in advance.
For private owners
A private owner should not remove or ship the ECU without the relevant professional workflow. The correct route is to find a nearby AutoTuner-equipped professional or Swaptune partner who can identify the ECU and manage the operation.
FAQ
Does every recent ECU need Mail-in Unlock?
No. The requirement depends on ECU and software identification.
Is the unlock itself a Stage 1 calibration?
No. It enables supported programming access; the calibration is a separate service.
Can the car be driven without the ECU?
No. It remains immobilised until the unit is returned and refitted.
Does Swaptune work with other programming-tool ecosystems?
Our current network workflow is based on AutoTuner so that access, support and file handling remain consistent.
