What a checksum does
A checksum is a mathematical integrity check stored with ECU data. When calibration areas change, the corresponding checksum must be corrected according to the ECU protocol. Professional tools and calibration software handle this operation where supported.
A valid checksum does not prove that a calibration is good. It only confirms a particular form of data consistency.
Why the original file is saved
The original provides a reference for identification, comparison and restoration. It must be associated with the correct vehicle, ECU hardware, software and job history. A random stock file from another vehicle is not a substitute.
Returning to stock
Restoration means writing the correct original software through a method supported by that ECU. Mechanical changes must also be compatible with the original calibration. Returning software to stock cannot undo hardware changes or repair a fault.
