Look at the complete cause
A blocked DPF may be the result of failed regeneration, but failed regeneration may itself come from a thermostat, injector, sensor, EGR or journey-pattern problem. A catalyst code can originate from misfires or mixture control. The first stored code is therefore a starting point, not always the failed part.
Maintenance affects emissions operation
Correct oil, fuel, service intervals and sufficient operating temperature help these systems work as intended. Repeated short trips can be particularly difficult for diesel after-treatment.
Tuning is not a substitute for repair
