    A Real Read retrieves calibration data directly from the ECU. A Virtual Read identifies the ECU software and obtains the matching original file from the tool provider’s verified database. Both can be valid professional workflows when the protocol explicitly supports them.

    Real Read

    The programming tool communicates with the ECU and transfers the supported memory areas. What is included depends on the protocol: it may be calibration data only or a broader backup.

    Virtual Read

    The tool first identifies hardware and software references. It then supplies the corresponding original file. “Virtual” does not mean guessed or generic; the match must be based on the exact references recognised by the tool.

    Why identification matters

    A model name and factory power are not enough to select an ECU file. Software revisions, manufacturer updates and hardware variants can differ. Writing an incorrect reference can create faults or make the ECU unusable.
